New Blog

new blog located at http://ruperthennen.wordpress.com/

Apparently blogspot isn't the way forward; wordpress is...

The New Blogger

One of the main reasons why I’ve never started a blog is because I know that I would never keep it up.  As a kid I would have great intensions of writing a diary or journal.  I thought that I would write in it every night before I went to sleep, the things that I had done that day.  The longest I lasted was six days.

So why have I started this blogging thing now?  As most of my friends and family know I have a big memory problem.  They affectionately call me ‘Memory Boy’.  I remember nothing.  Dates, times, locations, names – nothing.  You know when you go out on the piss and wake up the next day, your mate says to you: “Remember telling Kelly that you think she’s a skanky whore?!” NOPE! – Well it’s like that.  Sometimes complete memory loss as to what people are talking about, but in my case I’m not drunk – well, not all the time.  This is precisely why I’m starting this blog.  Some people blog for others to read.  Something funny to read, a quick narrative for people to see what others are up to.  Well this is not the reason for me, or at least not the main reason.  I am merely writing to myself in the future.  Trying to give myself something that might spark a memory of en event or even a conversation.

At the moment I’m working on cruise ships as a photographer.  It’s great – I get to meet loads of people and see the most amazing places.  I don’t want to end up in a few years not remembering where I went and who I went with.  OK – I will have my photos but I need more; I need names of people and places as well as the ins and outs of them.

I hope for my sake that I will keep this up and with a bit of luck my friends and family back home will be able to read up on what I’m doing, where I am and who I’m meeting.  I’m terrible at writing ‘update’ emails so I’ll be killing two birds.

The only trouble I foresee is not getting time to write.  It’s okay at the moment and for the next two weeks because I’m on the Azamara QUEST. It’s a small ship – 694 guests, there about – designed primarily for people who don’t want to die at home or in a hospital.  It’s full of old, grumpy and ill mannered American OAPs.  I hate them with a passion; their winging and moaning, their complaining, the volume at which they speak to one another, their dress sense on formal nights.  It’s not uncommon to see alongside the luggage coming off the ship on turnaround day a few body bags.  I was speaking to Dr. Chris the other night in the crew bar and he told me when the last time someone died on him.  New Years Eve 08/09 - Happy New Year Doc!  There is a good thing tied into this somewhere and that is that it’s very quiet on board (except when the guests are screaming their complaints at you).  These guests quite simply don’t do anything.  They sit up on pool deck wrapped up in blankets – yes, even in the Mediterranean – reading books or more commonly sleeping (I was worried once that a gentleman had actually died and was mystified when I nudged him to see if in fact he was alive, he yelled at me for rudely disturbing him).  Tending the gallery is torture if you don’t have your laptop with you.  So this will give me ample time to write my new blog.

We’ll see, shall we?  One more 14 day cruise around Italy and then it’s IV09 with the guys (Italian Vacation 2009).  Then vacation… sorry, holiday at home until July 19th.  Taylor, the IV09 Organizer, has informed me that there will be Wi-Fi in the Farm House in Italy so hopefully I’ll even be able to update the blog from there.  I just hope that I will be able to remember to update it!
